Zithande Mzansi Green Schools Programme Ignites Environmental Action in Stellenbosch!

We are delighted to share a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and youth empowerment. On Thursday, May 29th, we proudly launched the Zithande Mzansi Green Schools Programme at the historic Stellenbosch Town Hall. This landmark event, held in close partnership with the Stellenbosch Municipality, marks the official commencement of a powerful new initiative that places young people directly at the forefront of driving positive environmental change within their communities.

The launch day was an inspiring demonstration of collaborative spirit and a shared vision for a greener future. We extend our deepest gratitude to all our esteemed partners and supporters who were instrumental in making this event a resounding success. We were honoured by the presence of representatives from key organisations, including SIG, Fair Cape Dairies, Pick n Pay, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), the Western Cape Government, and EWASA. Their participation underscores the broad commitment to fostering sustainable practices and environmental awareness from various sectors.

The atmosphere at the Stellenbosch Town Hall was further elevated by the captivating performance of the Harry Gwala Secondary School Choir. Their vibrant voices served as a powerful reminder of the incredible talent, energy, and potential residing within our youth, reinforcing the very essence of the Zithande Mzansi programme.

A highlight of the launch was the insightful keynote addresses delivered by MMC Cllr. Ndiphiwe Olayi and our visionary CEO, Ms. Edith Leeuta. Their words resonated deeply, articulating the profound impact we anticipate this programme will have. Ms. Leeuta's powerful statement truly encapsulates the programme's core philosophy:

"This programme is more than just a schools initiative; it is a movement – a call to action for young people to fall in love with our country by caring for the environment, one piece of paper and one recycling bin at a time.”

This eloquent articulation highlights that the Zithande Mzansi Green Schools Programme is not merely about education; it's about fostering a deep connection to our environment and inspiring tangible, everyday actions that lead to a more sustainable South Africa.

To kickstart their journey as environmental champions, each of the twelve participating schools received a comprehensive package of resources. This included three dedicated recycling bins—one each for paper, plastic, and tin—along with specially designed learner books and stationery. These materials are intended to serve as practical tools for immediate environmental action and to facilitate ongoing environmental education within the school communities.

Through this programme, we are committed to nurturing a new generation of environmentally conscious citizens. By providing the necessary tools, knowledge, and inspiration, we are actively planting the seeds of change, one school at a time. We look forward to sharing regular updates on the progress and achievements of the Zithande Mzansi Green Schools Programme as these young leaders begin to transform their schools and communities.
